Why would I need to tell an counsellor my issues?
Questions like this may stem from concerns about "airing your dirty laundry" in public. The thought of telling an outsider your problems may be considered shameful, and may be connected with the worry of being judged or having your confidentiality breached. Remember though, the person you will see should be suitably qualified and accredited. At Life Pathways Psychotherapy, Nancy will keep your confidentiality of the utmost importance and will treat you with the greatest of care. The concerns you bring to counselling will not be intentionally judged, ridiculed, or downplayed in anyway.
If you have identified that trusting others is an issue or concern for you, you may wish to address this in treatment. This can be done through a free, 30 minute consultation, with minimal risk to you. This will create your opportunity to build trust and limit vulnerability. Through developing a trusting and strong relationship with your therapist, you will figure out how to acknowledge the encounters throughout your life that have made you wary. You will also become appreciative of your current circumstances in which you may no longer feel such caution.
I need not bother a psychotherapist!
Psychotherapists have entered the field of psychotherapy and counselling for the purpose of being able to be there and present for their clients. Psychotherapists enjoy hearing the stories of their clients and being a part of them; there is no greater joy than building a relationship with their clients and helping them on their life pathway (guess where I got the name from!).
I will do my best to help you feel comfortable, heard, and safe within the counselling sessions. I will ask about your thoughs on progress, your concerns you have up to that point, and where you see our counselling relationship going.
Perhaps it's time?
